Flash Fiction

Breakfast at the Nelson's

Cooking scorched the autumn air while Marta padded around the old farmhouse kitchen humming a melancholy tune. She still arose at the same hour though she did not notice that morning light would not appear for another hour.  She cooked breakfast. That is what she remembered.

A cat pranced went around Marta's ankles. After she turned the bacon, she scooped up the cat and hugged it before putting her downagain  "Shoo Tatters, before Lars sees you"

She resumed kneading dough then dropped the dough ball into bits onto a cookie sheet. Then she shoved the cookies into the oven.

She gave old Monty a ham bone and the black Labrador went on without giving Marta another look.  Monty thudded to the floor in his special place.

The arthritis in Marta's hands was more distressing than usual this morning, but she continued to hum and get breakfast ready for Lars. The moving upstairs let her know he would only be 5 minutes.  Lars' growling stomach and fierce appetite upon awakening would have him eager to devour everything that was set before him. Marta put his food on china plate, then poured two cups of coffee. She soon remembered the biscuits and with quivering hands carried these cookies to the breakfast table before Lars came down the stairs.

"Good morning, Lars," said Marta.

"Woman," then sat down in silence. The Labrador sat at his master's side looking for attention. Lars smiled at Monty, then continued eating.

After a long time, after Lars had drunk his last cup of coffee, it was a peaceful moment for Marta as she looked at Lars slumped over with his head resting in egg yolk. She leaned across the table and yanked out the hairball that had lodged in her husband's throat.

Marta sighed and massaged the pain in her hands that soon would become worse.  Tatters' tongue licked at her looking for more attention.

The roar of snoring rattled the kitchen table. Eternity snapped from the cheerless morning and with it came the familiar warning. "Shoo, Tatters," said Marta. Then she made a pillow with her arms on the table to rest her weary head, even though there was wood to chop.

Open Letter

Dear MUN,

I just wanted to say that I don't think it's fair that you have to make every students life so stressful, and and complicated. We are all trying to get an education and do something with our lifes and you make it almost impossible to make us seem perfect. All students give up their time, money and social life in order to try and impress you but nothing seems to be good enough.

I understand you are one of the cheaper universitys to attend and that is good for all of us students and our parents, but why does every subject has to be so hard, and why does everything have to pile up on one person in such a short amount of time? I do not understand why in order to achieve your goals all students have to go through so much stress first.

If nothing else just use this letter as some advice, us students really do try and do well but it's a huge adjustment and maybe, just maybe you could be a little easier on us sometimes ?

"I've got the wrong daughter"

A man barely escaped abduction charges after he somehow by mistake picked up the wrong girl from a primary school in Calgary.

Rebecca Wilson was waiting patiently for her dad's friend to pick her up from school in a small town loacted in Calgary. Meanwhile at the same time, Steven Hodder was suppose to be picking up his friends daughter by the name of Rebecca Clarke.

When Hodder arrived and saw Rebecca Wilson waiting on the sidewalk outside school, who looked vaguely like the girl he was told to pick up he called her over to his car.

"I told her I was looking for a girl by the name Rebecca", said Hodder "and the little girl said her name was Rebecca."

Neither of them knowing the difference the little girl got in the car with him. "It wasn't until we were going in the opposite direction of my house did I realize this isn't the right guy", said Rebecca Wilson.

Hodder was forced to head back to the primary school and switch Rebecca Wilson for Rebecca Clarke.

Big Bang Theory Review

The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, both of whom serve as executive producers on the show, along with Steven Molaro All three also serve as head writers. It premiered on CBC on September 24, 2007.

The show is centered on five characters: roommates Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, two physicists employed at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech); Penny, a waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall; and Leonard and Sheldon's equally geeky and socially awkward friends and co-workers, aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali. The geekiness and intellect of the four guys is contrasted for comic effect with Penny's social skills and common sense. Over time, supporting characters have been promoted to starring roles: Leslie Winkle, a physicist colleague at Caltech and, at different times, a lover of both Leonard and Howard; Bernadette Rostenkowski, Howard's fiancée and subsequent wife, a microbiologist and former part-time waitress alongside Penny; and neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler, who joins the group after surreptitiously being matched to Sheldon on a dating website. Bernadette and Amy became prominent characters after Penny and Leonard stopped dating.

The Big Bang Theory has won many awards for its extraordinary amount of comedy. It is my favorite comedy and everyone I know loves the show as well. My favorite character is Sheldon, he is known for his brains and amount of sarcasim that makes the show outrageously halarious. Here is a link for those who has never watched the show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBQ96J0NIdA.

I give this show five stars and would recommed it to anyone!

Plunderverse

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
Bu  they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
Th sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to makes you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
th  palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

A Day Cleaning Dishes

A Day Cleaning The Dishes

They sit there patiently waiting for someone to clean them

They feel dirty and disgusting

I hate washing the dishes

It's a chore I always have to force myself to do.

The dish detergent looks like it wants to be used

it wants to do it's job and help those dirty dishes get their shine back

I fill up the sink, dreading every second of it

and finally pop open to detergent and pour some into the water filled sink

bubbles appear everywhere and a fresh smell fills the kitchen

I have finally sucked it up and decided to do the dishes

one by one I place the dirty dishes into the soapy water

wash the plates, glasses, forks and knives,

scrubbing and placing the clean dishes down to dry

FINALLY, the dishes that were once so dirty

are now sqeaky clean

clean enough to see your reflection in them,

I must have outdone myself with these one I thought to myself.

As I turn around to finally sit down and relax

I see my little brother running to the cupboard to grab a glass and a plate,My temper started to boil

as I said, "you better be planning on washing that dish once you're finished mister!!"

.....Oh, whyyyyy bother

Lyric and Meaning

"Come Over"

I turn the TV off, to turn it on again
Staring at the blades of the fan as it spins around
Counting every crack, the clock is wide awake
Talking to myself, anything to make a sound

I told you I wouldn’t call, I told you I wouldn’t care
But baby climbing the walls gets me nowhere
I don’t think that I can take this bed getting any colder
Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over

You can say we’re done the way you always do
It’s easier to lie to me than to yourself
Forget about your friends, you know they’re gonna say
We’re bad for each other, but we ain’t good for anyone else

I told you I wouldn’t call, I told you I wouldn’t care
But baby climbing the walls gets me nowhere
I don’t think that I can take this bed getting any colder
Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over

We don’t have to miss each other, come over
We don’t have to fix each other, come over
We don’t have to say forever, come over
You don’t have to stay forever, come over

I told you I wouldn’t call, I told you I wouldn’t care
But baby climbing the walls gets me nowhere
I don’t think that I can take this bed getting any colder
Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over

Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over.
Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over.

The form of this song is pretty much free verse. There is no regular rhyme scheme to this song. The song is organized into four lines in each particular stanza which makes the song more organized even though there is no regular rhyme scheme or poetic devices used.

The speaker of this song is the author, he refers to himself in first person point of view and he seems to be singing in a desperate tone and also seem to be sad and let down. In the song he claims to be "talking to himself" and "turning the TV on and off" which symbolizes his sadness and how he is heart broken.

Chesney explained the song's meaning: "'Come Over'" is about two people who are as broken as their relationship is, when they realize deep down that their time together has probably ran its course," he seems to think that they keep going back to each other because it's familiar. It's about emotionally feeling wanted in a moment, but it feels impossible to let anybody else fill that place. I like this song because a lot of people can relate to it and the meaning of this song is so true.

Poem of a minor

Haiku

The ladybug lands
Upon a bright clue flower
As the sun shines bright

Limerick

There once was a man named Jim
That fell down and broke a limb
It was because he fell from a house
Since he was scared by a mouse
"you're so clumsy" says his wife Kim.

I think that the way any poem is formatted influences the way in which the content is perceived by the reader. Especially in poems such as the limerick. The rhyming scheme allows for a comical to the poem and allows the reader to stay interested. Also in a Haiku the format influences the context since it is breif and to the point.

Introduction to Enlgish 1080

First of all my name is Miranda Antle I was born on May 4th, 1994 in Carbonear General Hospital. I grew up in a small town called Bryant's Cove but am currently living on University Avenue in St. John's, NL and attending Memorial University. In university I am studying Kinesiology and plan on becoming a pediatric physiotherapist. In general, I am an easy going person and I love spending time with my friends. In my house I live with four of my closest friends and I am enjoying it very much since I am such a sociable person. I am looking forward to learing new things during my four years at MUN, and then specializing my degree at Dal University.

I generally love to learn, I attended ballet classes from ages 4-18 and it was a great experience. I love meeting new people and I also love to read. My favorite book would be The Outsiders, but I am currently reading a book called Fifty Shades of Grey. For the most part I am very friendly and I can make friends anywhere I go. In this course I would like to improve my writing and also change my outlook on poems and literature.
